Those old cold fusioneers must  just LOVE it!

Piqued?

The verb pique means to make someone angry or annoyed.

But when something piques your interest or curiosity, like LENR, the verb pique just means to arouse, stimulate, or excite.

Both the noun and verb are pronounced “pēk” and were borrowed from a French word meaning “a prick, irritation,” from Old French, from piquer “to prick.”

So you can see how something that pricks you could make you both excited and angry. Keystone, Fracking. Fukashima… Why when we have LENR energy at hand?

Enough to make you want to storm away from our present energy policies. That storming away, by the by, might be called a “fit of pique.”

CHOOSE YOUR WORDS peak/peek/pique

Let’s look at three homophones: peak, peek, and pique.

Peak is a topmost point, such as a mountain peak, or to reach that point (finally)

We’ve had a recent peak in LENR interest.

A peek is a glance or a quick look, like you can do with all these Forbes article links.

It’s frequently paired with sneak, which can lead you to use the incorrect peak; like carbon and U238 energy futures.

If LENR doesn’t pique your interest, what will?

Take a peek at this, it’s the very peak of this vocabulary presentation.

Here’s your mnemonic device:

You have to reach to gain the peak.

If you peer at something, you are peeking.

And if you’re piqued about something, there’s usually a question in your mind.

Cold Fusion Now Activist Report

As cold fusion LENR technology matures with market applications, I can not help but reach out to those who I hope most to succeed. Environmental Remediation (removal of toxins or radio-actives) and Environmental Restoration (ecology revival) are fairly new industries with an impressive growth rate.

The science of LENT – low energy nuclear transmutations, for the first time, allows us to advance beyond the contain or bury “solution” for nuclear waste; supplying a method to transmute these from harmful to benign elements.

Almost as a side benefit, (considering the boon of the aforementioned LENT technology) LENR energy will benefit the peoples of the Society for Ecological Restoration, as it will all of us, with reduced energy expenses. (restoration/remediation projects have high energy costs)

Ecological restoration and environmental remediation will be empowered and enabled by the recent validation of marketable LENR energy and emerging LENT (transmutation science). These folks deserve it, their hearts are in the right place as well as their brains.

Become a member, attend their 25th anniversary celebration, and watch this fast growing industry.

As the oil, coal, and U238 energy industry and infrastructure collapses there will be lots of more clean-up projects going on. Cold fusioneers seeking employment should attend. Exciting opportunities can be found. We will be creating them. Cold Fusion Now.

Plasma engine reproduced; now optimizing for efficiency

This is a power source that mankind needs to have. We need to make a push and get this energy out in the hands of people.Dr. Michael McKubre TeslaTech 2012

A revolutionary new engine powered by the pulsing of plasma has been successfully reproduced from an earlier lost technology and now needs an increase in efficiency to make a usable generator, say engineers from RG Energy, developers of the device.

They’ve launched a fundraising campaign at Indiegogo to accomplish this.

Cross-section from Papp patent; watch historical video at pappengine.com
Cross-section from 1984 Papp patent; watch historical video at RGEnergy.com

The design is derived from Josef Papp‘s noble gas engine, its secret inert gas mixture lost when he died. Granted a patent in 1984 for his invention, Papp was not explicit about the precise mix required.

Bob Rohner of RG Energy built those engines for Mr. Papp along with his brother Tom and worked closely with Papp over several years beginning in 1979. Owning successful businesses in Iowa, they had experience with large machinery and controls. “I pursued it because it was such a remarkable invention.”

“We’re trying to clean up the environment, we’re trying to get away from carbon-based fuels to clean up our atmosphere. We need to maintain the energy so we can have our quality of life,” Rohner said in a recent interview. [.mp3]

“These engines are capable of operating for long periods of time on charges of inert gases. They’re totally sealed, easy to build, economical to operate, and they’re totally clean,” says Bob, the mechanical engineer of the team.

“They have no emissions whatsoever to the environment.”

“We have proven to ourselves, and to many savvy observers, that we are capable of firing the single-cylinder, the two-cylinder, and a rotary fixture with inert gas pulses for hours on end, lifting large amounts of weight with no heat build-up.”

An astonishing claim, as inert gases do not readily react with other elements, and though a plasma performs work in pushing a piston, there is no exhaust to vent, and no heat generated. The engine appears to defy the laws of thermodynamics and what is known about heat cycles.

“One of my physicists Frank Andres believes there is a kind of re-absorption going on. Myself, I don’t believe heat is ever created to begin with,” attests Bob.

“To drive that piston up against a 300-lb load like I’m doing would take something like 1200-1400 degrees flash heat, and the Teflon insulators have a highest temperature rating of maybe 600 degrees, so it doesn’t appear as if the high-temperature is ever there to begin with. It amazes me that universities aren’t jumping all over this.”

Energy-dense plasma power

Witnesses to demonstrations of Papp’s engines, including aerospace executives, engineers and Navy scientists, have publicly testified to its capability of producing great amounts of power, without knowing exactly how it works.

“When I first heard of the Papp Engine, I was intrigued because it’s clearly impossible,” said Dr. Michael McKubre, a senior scientist at the forefront of research in new energy from metal-hydrides who spoke at TeslaTech 2012 in support of the project.

But after himself interviewing witnesses from Papp’s engine demonstrations where “observations of tests running hours or days in a closed room, no exhaust, with negligible temperature rise,” McKubre got interested.

Bob watched Papp’s engine produce between 5-10 times over-unity on a few ccs of inert gases and an electrical input. He and Tom finally developed the Twin Cylinder Dual Piston Engine as an experimental set-up that has, they believe, reproduced Papp’s process using a mere 200 ccs of a gas mixture.

The power generated by the inert gas plasma is convertible, meaning power can be extracted as electricity or mechanical force, depending on how the inputs are adjusted, but now they must increase the efficiency of the engine.

“We’re quite confident we can complete the recovery of this technology,” says Rohner, “our progress is steady and much has been achieved, but we have essentially three major items to complete yet.”

1 Build Papp’s gas mixer

One time Bob started the motor and got a huge amount of power; the next time, not nearly as much. It’s been hypothesized that impurities in the gas mixture prevent a full reaction.

“I didn’t believe it at first, but small amounts of contamination will have a stark effect on power output,” says Rohner.

Pre-mixed gas fuel canisters have 5% inaccuracy
Pre-mixed gas canisters are accurate to about 5%

“It turns out that 1/10,000 contamination has a major effect on plasma formation. Now it’s time to make a fuel mixture more accurate and clean.”

Papp’s last patent was for an apparatus that apparently filtered the gases as well as made sure the mixture was exactly correct. When the Rohners first went to Florida, they saw Papp’s glass-tube mixer “all busted-up on the floor”, damaged from shipping. For years afterwards, Bob didn’t think much of it.

“About six months ago, I found a bunch of these old pictures and started going through them, and I realized Papp had not only replaced that mixer once, he actually built two new ones. Nobody has adequately researched or rebuilt this fuel mixing apparatus yet, and it’s looking like a worthwhile thing, probably the most important element to get completed as soon as possible.”

2 Big step with the crossover

“It was described in Papp’s patent that the engine could run as one-cylinder, but only in an inefficient manner, and the evidence is proving that statement correct. To run efficiently you always have to be in pairs,” says Bob. “You can’t be on a teeter-totter with one person, you got to have both.”

Twin Engine
The Twin Cylinder will have crossover

With electrical crossover, one cylinder powers the other, and vice-versa.

“As the plasma collapses in one cylinder, it generates a large amount of electricity, and as the piston travels through the coils, it creates a back EMF. The back EMF and this generated electricity needs to be transferred at the proper time to the opposite cylinder, to one, excite the gases, and two, trigger the plasma pulse in the opposite cylinder.”

3 Re-assemble the original Papp engine

Videos of Papp’s original engine running on the dynos are posted online, but the machine that Bob and Tom built years ago now sits in their workshop waiting resurrection. Results of electrical crossover on the Twin Cylinder will be applied to Papp’s original to complete a serial engine.

“It’s perfectly capable of handling several hundred HP, which is what we need to do. The structure is good, it needs the electrics re-built and some of the stainless sleeves re-honed. Everything on the engine is custom, so it’s very expensive to do.”

Help wanted

Classic photo of Tom Rohner and early plasma engine
Tom Rohner and early plasma engine.

Bob’s brother Tom Rohner had a career as a Chief Software Architect at both Compaq and HP Computers besides working on plasma engines. A year and a half ago, Tom succumbed to pancreatic cancer. Bob lost his best friend as well as Tom’s extensive skills as a computer and electrical engineer.

RG Energy is now looking for a talented full-time Electrical Engineer to complete the sophisticated Twin Cylinder crossover.

“Buckets have to switch from being both anodes to being an anode-cathode, at certain times you’re handing 1000 Volts and at other times you’re handling 40 Volts at high currents, and so this stuff is precise. We’re looking for somebody to fill Tom’s shoes.”

Experienced electrical engineer needed for crossover
Experienced electrical engineer needed for crossover
With a good electrical engineer, it should take 8-12 months to get the gas mixer, the cross over and the build of the serial model completed. These engines could then penetrate the market quickly, complementing cold fusion technology.

Bob adds, “This is a compact energy source that can be mobile, it can run in outer space or the bottom of the ocean. The difference between this engine and cold fusion is that cold fusion is heat-driven. To generate electricity you instantly drop to a 30- 40% loss in production. Then you have to take that electricity to some storage source, to batteries, and yet, here’s a generator that you can run for thousands of hours on one charge. The flexibility of this power source is more important than anything.”

“I hope cold fusion is developed, but to base our future on one solution isn’t that smart.”

“We have odd electricity and odd energy, both real and I believe, coupled,” says Michael McKubre. “To really do the job well, we need a well-equipped lab and able experts willing to suspend disbelief. I’ve been following Bob around ever since, waiting for him to produce his machine, and he’s getting close.”

The Mystery and Legacy of Joseph Papp’s Noble Gas Engine by Eugene Mallove Infinite Energy Magazine

New energy solution from Nobel laureate ignored by NYTimes

1973 Nobel laureate Dr. Brian Josephson responded to the April 3 New York Times letter Invitation to a Dialogue: Action on the Climate by Robert W. Fri asking for social scientists to become more engaged in promoting low-cost energy alternatives.

Fri is Chairman of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences’ Alternative Energy Future project and a visiting scholar at Resources for the Future.

Read 2011 report on the topic: Beyond Technology: Strengthening Energy Policy Through Social Science [.pdf]

Josephson’s letter answered with the solution offered by low-energy nuclear reactions (LENR) and it did not appear with the other responses published in the Sunday Dialogue, so we post it here:

—————

Robert W. Fri (Apr. 3rd.) asks, in regard to climate change, for ‘steps that will make useful progress at low cost’. I suggest his committee look carefully into so-called cold fusion, a good source for which is the Library at lenr.org. (corrected from lenr.com)

In retrospect the conventional view, that the claims of Fleischmann and Pons in this regard were erroneous, can be seen to have been based on a number of faulty assumptions, some of which were discussed in a lecture by Peter Hagelstein at MIT (see http://www.infinite-energy.com/images/pdfs/VernerIAP2013.pdf). The claim that in such systems heat is generated far in excess of what can be explained in conventional terms has by now been confirmed in very many investigations, though reproducibility on demand has been a problem. The factors determining how much heat will be generated in any given sample are at present poorly understood; thus modest funding to address these issues should pay dividends. Once these factors are understood, there is a real possibility that fusion processes at ordinary temperatures in suitable materials can contribute significantly to energy resources in the future, and thereby help to combat the problem of climate change.

Nanoscale Ag may decrease radiation of Cesium 134 and 137 by LENR transmutation?

On  the week of Feb 5, the conference of “radiation detectors and their uses” was held in High Energy Accelerator Research Organization in Tsukuba city of Japan.  Japanese web site is (here) and Google translated one is (here).

In the conference, there was a very interesting presentation “Experiment and verification of the radioactive cesium decrease effect of nanoscale pure silver (Ag) with supporting material” for LENR watchers.  (This title is translated to English by me and may be inaccurate.)

The Japanese abstract (PDF document) was published (here) and p.69 and p.70 are for the presentation.

Experiment and verification of the radioactive cesium decrease effect of nanoscale pure silver (Ag) with supporting material

The author, Dr. Shin Iwasaki, a physicist and ex-professor of Tohoku University of Japan, describes the results of some experiments that the nanoscale Ag supported by bone charcoal and white granite or collagen liquid can decrease the radioactivity of the radioactive cesium in Fukushima prefecture of Japan in the laboratory.

In Fukushima, after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of March 11, 2011, the soil and many houses were contaminated by radioactive cesium. To decontaminate, people had to wash roofs and walls by water, and remove the surface-soil containing the radioactive material.  The big problem is how to treat the washing water or removed soil, because we have no way to decrease the radioactivity.

Dr. Norio Abe, a biologist and the chief of Itabashi Firefly Ecosystem Center in Tokyo, thought of the idea to use nanoscale silver Ag to decontaminate radioactive soil because he had well-known the capability of nanoscale Ag to keep the environment clean for the firefly.

Surprisingly, the radioactivity of the soil decreased after he had spread nanoscale Ag with collagen liquid.

While the reason or mechanism is unknown, he succeeded to decrease the radioactivity of contaminated water or soil in several fields in Fukushima.

In March 2012, Dr. Shin Iwasaki joined the group with Dr. Norio Abe and started to help verify the strange phenomenon.  Then in Nov 2012, after much trial and error, he was able to measure the effect. In the abstract, the main result is shown in Fig. 1.

He made the sample in U9-type container by combining the 4-5 nanometer Ag with bone charcoal and washing with water including Cesium.  He measured radioactivity by monitoring the gamma spectrum over a long period using Csl (T1) detector + 512ch MCA.  He said that his team payed attention to uniformity of the sample, self shielding, volatilization and location of the measuring instruments.

While the natural half-life of Cs-134 is 2 years, and one of Cs-137 is 30 years, Dr. Iwasaki analysed the experiment and concluded there was a decrease in the “half-life” of radioactivity of these Cesium isotopes to about 1 or 2 months.

The graph of Fig. 1 shows the time series of the relative values of radioactivity to the original sample without nanoscale Ag.  For example,  “1.0” is the value of the original sample and “0.6” means the value is 60% of the original sample.  3P and LC shows the following values and the background radioactivity is reduced.

3P: sum of 3 peaks including 604keV of Cs-134, 661.6keV of Cs-137 and 795.7keV of Cs-134 and others.

LC: sum of continuous values under the 3 peaks.

Nano-silver-Fig-1

This experiment started at Dec 22, 2012 and ended at Jan 16, 2013.  In the first few days, the half-life of the radioactivity is equal to about 20 days,  He added 0.6 cc pure water to the sample and stirred at Jan 14, 2013 and the value started to decrease again.

This result is very impressive for me because the experimental system is simple and the effect is big. Dr. Shin Iwasaki suggested the phenomenon may be one kind of LENR.

Unfortunately, this project has little budget, and he can not analyze the mix of elements of the used sample.  In the abstract, he calls for other scientists to reproduce this experiment.  I hope they will too.  This phenomenon may help to decontaminate water and soil around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Cold Fusion: A Big Idea for Minnesota Energy Research! A Better Comet: Post Bulletin Beats New York Times

That was a nice comet last week… a more spectacular one is due to appear in December

“Cold Fusion: A Big Idea for Minnesota Energy Research” Friday, February 8, 2013, by Tom Robertson, Post Bulletin. (view) The Post-Bulletin is the largest  daily newspaper in Southeastern Minnesota.

From Tom Robertson’s article:

  • The Hunt’s focus on sustainable living is supported by profits from a wildly successful invention Paul devised in the 1990s. The self-taught inventor patented the “turtle meter,” which allows utility companies to remotely read electric power meters.
  • Hunt sold his invention for tens of millions. His company now is using the money for research and development, searching for the next breakthrough invention to sustain the company and its 20 employees.
  • That’s where cold fusion comes in. The technology was first introduced in 1989 by two scientists who claimed they were able to produce excess heat from an experiment that combined hydrogen and electricity with various metals.
  • When other scientists were unable to consistently replicate the effect, mainstream scientists largely rejected cold fusion.
  • When Paul Hunt first started looking into the technology two years ago, he and his son, Ryan, the company’s head of research and development, were skeptical.
  • “Both of us looked at each other here and said ‘cold fusion, I thought that was dead. I thought that was fake,'” Hunt said. “We started paying attention to it. And then we started looking at the history of it, and found out that it really is real. It’s being done in labs all over the world.”
  • In the company’s research lab, Ryan Hunt, who holds a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota, recently stood over a pair of small, transparent tubes containing ceramic structures that hold pairs of hair-thin wires. The apparatus is similar to ones he saw demonstrated by an Italian scientist at a conference in Korea last summer.
  • Hunt said he and his team achieved the cold fusion effect for the first time just last month.
  • The same unexplainable effect has reportedly been achieved at more than 100 other laboratories worldwide. Most have ditched the term “cold fusion” in favor of the term “low-energy nuclear reactions.”
  • Hunt Utilities Group has teamed with scientists in Europe to collaborate. They post their data on low-energy nuclear reactions online and invite other researchers to review and comment on their methods.

YET… The following New York Times article appears (with no mention of cold fusion). Was the Hunts’ cold fusion research edited out of the interview material?

New York Times – January 11, 2013, Environment section – Green: A Blog About Energy and the Environment – “In Rural Minnesota, a 70-Acre Lab for Sustainable Living” By Bryn Nelson (post)

Within this laboratory of energy-efficient housing, the Hunt Utilities Group, or HUG, mixes high-tech ingenuity with homespun practicality and a touch of whimsy in its drive toward what Mrs. Hunt laughingly dubs “decadent sustainability. ”

WEIRD… Didn’t the NYT folks go to the Hunt Utilities Group site for background research? Didn’t they realize they were nibbling at the scoop of the millennium?

Did the NYT people read any of the related material… LENR by Paul Hunt or NASA? (NASA)

HUG quote, “For 10 years we have been focused on solar, wind, super insulation, etc. This new energy could make all those things obsolete.”

I doubt that Mr. and Mrs. Hunt, or their son, failed to mention cold fusion research to the NYT interviewers.

What do the Hunts think about cold fusion? Visit the HUG site… (Hunt Utilities Group site) Read the (Feb 2013 coldfusionnow article) which contains the following…

  • “Paul Hunt and his son Ryan formed the Hunt Utilities Group (HUG) and initiated the Martin Fleischmann Memorial Project to reproduce and test cold fusion experiments.”

and…

  • “They announced the project at the most recent International Conference on Cold FusionICCF-17 in Daejon, South Korea, and since then, have been experimenting with Francesco Celani‘s nickel wire, making surprising discoveries about the material. Their work is open-source and can be found at quantumheat.org.”

NOW…

New York Times is closing its’ “Green: A Blog…” site.  They ask, “Follow Our Environmental Coverage” (link)

WHY should I do so?

I wonder what the NYT “Green: A Blog…” writers feel about this? (list)  Also at…(list)

Or Andy Revkin? “A Farewell to Green” By Andrew C. Revkin, March 2, 2013 (article)

Readers of the New York Times may want to ask the editors… “What’s up with cold fusion now?”

The New York Times editors may answer…

“Censorship of cold fusion research and LENR engineering is our policy.”

How else is it that the Post Bulletin Beats the New York Times coverage of the ‘cold fusion comet’ appearing brightly in labs…

Like the 70-Acre Lab for Sustainable Living In Rural Minnesota?

“Within science is the art of appreciation; the source of all true inspiration.” – gbgoble2013

Paul et al, Thanks for the HUG! Hunt Utilities Group… LENR research and engineering.

Thank you, Tom Robertson and the folks at Post Bulletin.

Cold Fusion Now

Comet… A long haired star that appears from the unknown.

Comet Etymology

c.1200, from Old French comete (12c., Modern French comète), from Latin cometa, from Greek (aster) kometes, literally “long-haired (star),” from kome “hair of the head” (cf. koman “let the hair grow long”) [Middle English comete, from Old English comta, from Late Latin, from Latin comts, from Greek komts, long-haired (star), comet, from kom, hair.] comet·ary (–tr), co·metic (k-mtk) adj.

Word History: Comets have been feared throughout much of human history, and even in our own time their goings and comings receive great attention. Perhaps a comet might seem less awesome if we realized that our name for it is based on a figurative resemblance between it and humans. This figurative name is recorded first in the works of Aristotle, in which he uses kom, the Greek word for “hair of the head,” to mean “luminous tail of a comet.” Aristotle then uses the derived word komts, “wearing long hair,” as a noun meaning “comet.” The Greek word was adopted into Latin as comts, which was refashioned in Late Latin and given the form comta, furnishing Old English with comta, the earliest English ancestor of our word comet.

“Epistemology and Intertextuality in Early American Cometography”

Christopher Johnson

In the winter of 1680-81 an enormous comet appeared in the nighttime skies of Europe and the Americas. This “blazing star” occasioned numerous treatises, poems, pamphlets, broadsides, ballads, engravings, and woodcuts. Evaluating this cometary copia, the historian of science, Pingré, in 1783 observes:

The world was inundated with writings on these phenomena, on their nature, on their significations; for there were still astrologers and cometomantics [Cométomantiens] … I believe that the languages were not even as confused at the Tower of Babel, as were the sentiments concerning this famous comet.

Pingré’s belated impatience with the discursive flood of “astrologers and cometomantics” echoes of course the more general Cartesian objection to the confusion of words and things, a confusion that L’Académie des Sciences and Royal Society dedicated themselves to eliminating. But the arduous nature of this effort in seventeenth-century Europe is exemplified by the numerous, often-conflicting interpretations of the 1618, 1665, and 1680 comets—to say nothing of the unprecedented “new stars” or novas of 1572 and 1604, which were often treated as cometary phenomena.
