Cold Fusion atomic energy has been ignored and pushed aside in discussions/ presentations about alternative energy for too long. Advantages include little/no radioactive decay matter, and extremely high energy output. As an example, 1 or 2 future-generation generators themselves could power a metropolis city the size of Los Angeles, California for a month on one small supply of common inexpensive elements. Current energy generation comes from more than 5-sources. World leaders in nations/unions such as Japan, The United States of America, Russia, South Africa, The European Union, and so on have the ability and power to fully engage in the building mass energy production plants now.  “Nuclear fission power plants and weapons are dangerous.”

As of 07/02/2012 this is now an international petition.

This is among the safest, cleanest, and most powerful energy resources that has been proven to be as or more productive than coal, and nuclear fission; which is more commonly known. Other technologies based on science fiction stories like the various Star Trek television series from the 1960’s through recent series, offer multiple ideas that need to be officially explored further. Use of this energy source has the potential of replacing oil, coal, and natural gas use worldwide. The nation that does this first would likely reduce foreign dependence by 100%, erase it’s own and most other nations trade debts and retain all funds used towards purchasing foreign energy resources. The conservative powers that currently exist and the energy corporations that want to hold onto their dominance are fighting this in every way possible.

An accommodating resource of energy using a smaller cold fusion engine can also power vehicles of all sizes.  World leaders need to endorse this safer alternative too. Job losses may initially be massive but 3x to 10x more jobs would be created. Worldwide unemployment would drop dramatically due to increased lower cost energy availability.

We are in a new and more open time to succeed. Let’s make them listen and act for the people, our planet, not the corporate billionaires and subservient politicians!

We are living in a world dependent on a finite source of fuel subject to M. King Hubbert’s production curve over time. This graph is from his 1956 Nuclear Energy and Fossil Fuels. It shows an increase in petroleum production, the production reaching a peak, and then, production falling.

Since 2005, global oil production has remained flat.

The Post Carbon Institute‘s video YOU ARE HERE: The Oil Journey recounts the century-and-a-half Oil Age and gives a context for Peak Oil, whose effects we live with now on the down-slope of the curve. Narrated by the great documentary voice of Peter Coyote, the half-hour video profiles the relationship between the economic and social benefits gained from fossil fuel energy, benefits that are now altering as access to fossil fuel becomes more difficult.

Fossil fuels are “concentrated and portable”, but most of the easily accessed oil, coal and gas is gone. What remains is harder to retrieve, of a lower quality, more costly to produce, and coming with a continually diminishing Energy Return on Energy Invested ERoEI.

The PCI comprises a group of researchers and writers gathered together to sound the alert on Peak Oil, the condition of a peak in production in oil, and develop strategies that will allow human communities to survive a post-petroleum world. They believe a Renewable Energy Economy based on conventional alternative energy is inevitable, but it will be “smaller, slower and more localized”.

Alternatives “should be invested in”, but a problem remains. The ERoEI for conventional alternatives like solar and wind is not nearly as high as fossil fuels like oil, coal, or gas. According to their 2009 report, PCI concludes that “None of the conventional alternative energy sources will maintain our current energy level of use” and “The amount of investment capital to develop the technology is just not there”.

Like many in the Peak Oil-Collapse community, PCI is wary of believing there will “always be a new technology to come along” to keep the economy going. They are skeptical of the attitude that “only innovation and investment can solve our environmental problems”.

And I would too, if I didn’t already know of the solution that cold fusion offers.

Cold fusion scientists generally refer to Energy Return, a simple ratio of thermal Energy Out to equivalent electrical Energy In. The first prototypes of commercial cold fusion are steam generators that have demonstrated energy returns of 400 and higher.

However, as the technology is based on a not-fully-understood reaction between hydrogen and a bit of metallic powder, initial technologies for agency and industrial use are claiming more modest 6 to 25 times thermal energy return over the equivalent electrical energy input.

But the potential is even greater. This is a nuclear fusion-sized power which could provide an energy density a hundred-million times greater than the chemical burning of fossil fuels.

Cold fusion uses a fuel of hydrogen H and its isotope deuterium D, both found in water. One in every 6400 hydrogen atoms in the ocean is a deuterium atom. Deuterium combined with oxygen makes heavy water D20, just like hydrogen combined with oxygen can form regular water H20.

Researcher Jed Rothwell, author of Cold Fusion and the Future, writes of the abundance of deuterium, the first form of hydrogen to be used in cold fusion:

There are $2 \hspace{1 mm} \times \hspace{1 mm} 10^{13}$ tons of heavy water on earth, enough to last 3.2 billion years at present energy consumption rates.

But since simple hydrogen also works, this guarantees a virtually inexhaustible fuel source.

Regarding energy density, he writes:

Deuterium fusion yields $3.45 \hspace{1 mm} \times \hspace{1 mm} 10^{14}$ joules per kilogram (345 million megajoules).
Gasoline has 45 megajoules per kilogram (or 132 megajoules per gallon).
Therefore, a kilogram of deuterium gas has roughly as much energy as 7.6 million kilograms of gasoline (2.6 million gallons).

The metals that “host” the reaction are transition metals like palladium and nickel. Only a few grams are needed for tens of kilowatts of thermal energy. The 1.25 grams of nickel contained in one US 5 cent piece could generate as much energy as in 5 barrels of oil. Only a tiny portion of the metal is consumed in the reaction; the rest is recyclable.

The first commercial cold fusion generators make steam, not electricity. Currently, independent labs are working to make the steam viable to turn a turbine, and create electrical power. When the electricity generated is used to power the generator, then we have a new level of energy return.

Peak Oilers have verified the predictions of M. King Hubbert’s fossil fuel production curve, but haven’t looked to the right-hand side of the graph, and our nuclear energy future.

There is no fission nuclear future using dangerous and dirty radioactive fuel.
There is no hot-fusion mega-facilities ready to come online any time soon.

But there is a third choice in nuclear power. Cold fusion.

Clean, abundant, energy-dense, and revolutionary.

Mass power outages from superstorms no issue for cold fusion

Storms hit the US hard this past year.

In August, a large hurricane took an unusual path and dumped record amounts of rain up the whole of the eastern coast, saturating grounds and leaving more than 6 million people without electrical power.

Just days ago, an early snowstorm in the northeast of the country broke tree limbs still full of leaves, downing power lines that left 3 million without power.

A surprise two-feet of snow hit some areas and brought business-as-usual to a halt as residents were trapped in their homes, without electricity, and in some cases without heat. Consequently, schools, shops and businesses were closed and billions of dollars of economic damage is added to the infrastructural damage. Close to a dozen people were reportedly killed by fallen power lines and other storm-related circumstances.

As climate change brings more severs swings in weather, from extreme heat and drought to early frost and bitter snowstorms, we enter into the waning moments of both the current economic model and energy paradigm. The confluence of environmental crisis meets economic and energy collapse in what some call a Clusterf**k.

Dismay and despair fill the minds of those who’ve lost everything amidst the crises. Occupy Wall Street is criticized by the corporate media outlets as having no clear demands, but they’re just not listening. The ills of this lifestyle are too complex to be managed by a talking head in 5 seconds.

Or is it? The simple solution to our ecological, economic, and energy problems may be described in two seconds or less.

Cold fusion.

The radical new energy that can be generated on location, as needed, without the requirement of power lines and substations. That’s right, cold fusion technology means you generate your own power in your own house when you need it, not connected to any grid or centralized power plant. Robust and resiliant, cold fusion technology will be our energy go-to as the fossil fuel infrastructure fades away into ruin.

Cold fusion energy means:

NO centrally located coal plants.
NO centrally located nuclear plants using dangerous radioactive fuel.
NO high-voltage electricity substations.
NO power lines across the wilderness, in town, or on your street.
NO power companies monitoring your consumption and dictating your bill.

Cold fusion is disruptive technology that will change the energy industry from a centralized corporate hierarchy to a decentralized individual network. It is for this and other reasons that cold fusion science has been abandoned by the Department of Energy, a federal entity populated with oil and coal industry veterans as well as hot fusion enthusiasts.

Looking at all the power plants along the eastern US coast that were in the path of Hurricane Irene this year shows the risk that large centralized power plants pose.

Dangerous toxins from coal and coal ash, radioactive fuels, oil and gas pipeline ruptures, all pose a threat to the environment we live in.

Losing services due to weather related events risk the well-being of residents who relay on electricity to power medical devices, food refrigeration, and other important needs.

The economic toll becomes incalculable when homes, businesses, schools and government offices are without power.

This past August, as a hurricane hit the coast, the state of Texas was suffering from a long drought with more days of 100-degree-and-above temperatures than any year since records began. With the drought, farmers lost crops and cattle, wildlife suffered from lack of food and water, and costs shot up when electricity needs increased.

As our economy runs down the peak oil slope, higher fossil fuel costs, loss of jobs coupled with the exponential growth of paper money create human and ecological tragedies that are sure to continue, unless we change paths.

Cold fusion is a reaction that takes place between hydrogen and the atoms inside a solid metal. The metal is “host” to the reaction, but the atoms of the metal also take part in the energy-generating process.

The first commercial device to be released for industrial use runs on simple hydrogen, the main element in water, along with the metal nickel, just like the nickel in your pocket. Called a nickel-hydrogen exothermic reaction the device makes steam heat, heat is clean. There is no carbon dioxide emitted during the reaction.

A single 1 Megawatt nickel-hydrogen E-Cat, the cold fusion-based steam generator created by inventor Andrea A. Rossi, would consume about 20 kilograms of nickel powder and 36 kilograms of hydrogen each year with the only by-product is steam and hot water. The nickel is recyclable after six-months of operation.

On the other hand, a 1 Megawatt coal-fired power plant will burn 20,000 rail cars of coal each year. At 183.65 metric tons CO2 per railcar [see here], that’s 3.7 million metric tons of CO2 for 20,000 railcars.

Since a metric ton is 1000 kilograms, that 3.7 billion kilograms of CO2 emitted annually from a single 1 MW coal-fired power plant.

Nature is not finished with us. In fact, she’s only just begun. With 7 billion people on this planet extracting resources exponentially, climate change and extreme weather add another layer to the stressed social and economic systems.

Cold fusion offers a path to navigate the near-future crises that inevitably will affect our planet to a greater degree. And when storms take the power out, it offers a safe, clean, energy that you have the perogative to turn on and off at will, your will.

The transition from dirty fossil fuels and today’s dangerous nuclear power plants into clean cold fusion will entail the dismantling of an entire infrastructure core to the economy and culture of the world, and particularly for the Western nations.

The scale and reach are staggering.

What would a transition narrative look like? Edmund Storms, LENR researcher and author of The Science of Low Energy Nuclear Reaction has thought about these issues for two decades, and has some compelling scenarios.

We spoke with Dr. Storms this past August and this is what he had to say on “Transition”.
