  1. If you ask me, it’d be a little short of disastrous for us to discover a source of clean, cheap, abundant energy because of what we would do with it. We ought to be looking for energy sources that are adequate for our needs, but that won’t give us the excesses of concentrated energy with which we could do mischief to the earth or to each other.
    – Amory Lovins in The Mother Earth–Plowboy Interview, Nov/Dec 1977, p. 22

Giving society cheap, abundant energy . . . would be the equivalent of giving an idiot child a machine gun.
    – Paul Ehrlich, “An Ecologist’s Perspective on Nuclear Power,” May/June 1978 issue of Federation of American Scientists Public Issue Report

By the way, I don’t agree, but that is a rational counter-argument.

    1. Brad, I wouldn’t call their comments rational at all, but drawn fear. I fear too, for the life on this planet which is currently in a tailspin of extinction.

Give our world nothing better, and we will will have no forest for burning all the wood, acidic oceans for burning all the coal, CO2 greenhouse atmosphere for burning all the oil, and a planetary ecology destroyed by radioactive fallout from a nuclear fuel disaster.

Let’s turn that around! “Giving fearful myopics more promotion than the solution itself is like giving hot fusion and oil industry executives high-level energy policy-making positions in federal government to provide a “balanced” viewpoint.”

  2. Good to see another book out there.
The way I see it is that Cold Fusion will allow us to come up for one last gasp of air before the exponential function overwhelms us.
To illustrate: When I was born there were 2.52 billion people on the face of this planet. Since then the population doubled and we are near dour second doubling. In other words there are now nearly 4 times as many people on the planet. The next doubling will take us to 8 times in about 32 years.
We need the energy to leave the surface of the planet.
Please don’t complain about how hard it will be. It will be a walk in the park compared with the alternative.
Cannibalism is not unknown among humans.
That is a road down which we should not go.
We need that one last gasp.
