ARPA-E Wants “Transformational Energy Technologies”

After Cold Fusion Now sent letters to Congressional Sub-committees requesting hearings on ARPA-E funding, and subsequent hearings were held into their funding priorities, ARPA-E has announced a funding opportunity for researchers in “Transformational Energy”.

What source of energy is more transformational than the ultra-clean fusion-sized power from hydrogen in a transition metal?

We urge all who can to apply for this funding. Sure its paperwork, and maybe you’ve been denied before, but this time, it could be different, it could mean important dollars moving into this field for the first time.

And if they don’t fund any cold fusion projects, well, we’ll….we’ll….
we will do nothing less than hold those responsible accountable.

From the press release of March 2, 2012 – 2:31pm from ARPA-E.gov:

ARPA-EWashington, D.C. – Today, the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) issued a $150 million funding opportunity open to all transformational energy technologies to support the Obama Administration’s all-of-the-above approach to solving our nation’s most pressing energy challenges. This Open Funding Opportunity Announcement is a call to our country’s brightest scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs to propose early-stage research projects that would not otherwise be able to attract private investment, but could lead to breakthrough energy technologies. This is the second open funding opportunity released under ARPA-E. The first was in 2009.

“Today we are calling on our nation’s best and brightest to catalyze energy breakthroughs in all areas imaginable through this Open Funding Opportunity Announcement, which illustrates the true purpose of ARPA-E,” said Director Majumdar. “Innovation is our nation’s sweet spot, and it is critically important that we look at every possible energy solution in order to ensure America’s future prosperity and security.”

This Open Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) joins ARPA-E’s other recently issued FOA – Methane Opportunities for Vehicular Energy (MOVE) – which will make $30 million available to find ways to harness our abundant supplies of domestic natural gas for vehicles and was announced by President Obama last week at the University of Miami.

More details on all of ARPA-E’s Funding Opportunities and Requests For Information are available HERE. Individual awards under the Open FOA will range between $250,000 and $10 million.

President Obama launched the Energy Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) in 2009 to seek out transformational, breakthrough technologies that are too risky for private sector investment but have the potential to translate science into quantum leaps in energy technology, form the foundation for entirely new industries, and in the future have large commercial impact.

Including its most recent round of selections, ARPA-E has funded a total of more than 180 projects, for $521.7 million in awards across 12 program areas. Demonstrating the success ARPA-E has already seen, the Agency announced last year that eleven of its projects that received $40 million from ARPA-E for innovative research, were able to use this funding to demonstrate results, which allowed these teams to secure more than $200 million in outside private capital investment.

ARPA-E’s third annual Energy Innovation Summit featured 107 speakers, including: President Bill Clinton; Microsoft Founder and Chairman, Bill Gates; Xerox CEO, Ursula Burns; FedEx CEO, Fred Smith; BDT Capital Chairman, Lee Scott; Deputy Secretary of Defense, Ashton Carter; MIT President, Susan Hockfield; U.S. Energy Secretary, Steven Chu; and ARPA-E Director, Arun Majumdar. The Summit attracted 2,440 attendees from 49 states and 26 countries and featured a Technology Showcase displaying over 240 breakthrough energy developments from ARPA-E’s awardees, finalists and other teams.

  1. We have a saying on our website: “He who is one step ahead is a genius. He who is two steps ahead is a crackpot.”

Someone smartly added when I was in Estonia: “He who is one step behind is the government.”

Don’t look to any government, especially the corrupt U.S. govt. for leadership. For them, “revolutionary” is tiptoeing into “one step ahead” territory, in contrast to “one step behind”. Cold Fusion is “two steps ahead” type of stuff. They’ll never touch it under the present state of things.

  2. Can anybody help, I seem to have lost the link for the article in Nature journal explaining that a new form of energy had been found and encouraging all scientists and the establishment to inform themselves of the wonderful possibilities this technology may hold.
It also was critical of the lack of funding and manpower being directed to this exciting area, and contained a full apology for the horrendous treatment received from the establishment by Pons & Fleischmann for simply doing their job.
It is good that science is investigating the unknown with such vigor and enthusiasm, it must make all scientists proud to be a part of such a wonderful organisation that open-mindedly pursues the TRUTH for the benefit of all mankind and not hide and debunk the TRUTH for selfish and misguided reasons.

  3. An apology, George Hants? Well I never!
Can anyone apologise for oil wars?

This is urgent. We must leave no stone unturned, have it engraved in palladium and endlessly paraded around to each and every University as a perpetual reminder about the dangers of vested interests and over zealous Left brains.

Where would we be now in a parallel universe where everyone behaved honourably and with child-like naivety?

  4. Geez, what an awful couple of sentences from Nature.
So many negatives, you can’t hardly get what their saying.
I don’t think that’s the one you were looking for george…… there zero positive there!

What’s interesting is that they make these pronouncements within months of the F&P’s announcement; that article is from July 1989. Science claims to be diligent and reasonable, but they sure decided pretty quickly, by the APS meeting May 1989, that cold fusion wasn’t going to merit attention and that those interested in exploring the phenomenon should CLEAR OUT.

For twenty-three years we’ve paid the price with pollution, war, and scarcity. Now, we’re at a point where people world-wide are learning that there are other options, we can be free, and we won’t stop moving towards that freedom until we achieve it.

Sterling might be right, but I’m just curious if ARPA-E will come through with SOMETHING, some kinda crumbs, after all the dollars they’ve spread around elsewhere.

  5. Here’s Justin Hall-Tipping talking about a few new methods of obtaining energy. His keynote is correct:

THE FUTURE OF THE GRID – IS NO GRID.

There are plenty of LENR researchers who should apply for this ARPA-E money. NASA paid for their LENR video (and Zawodney’s salary) – not like the guv’mnt is trying real hard to deny what’s coming. BTW, good speech Justin.

    1. I’m not quite sure, but I’m fairly ceitarn that it’s because the sun heats up the atmosphere, which causes changes in air pressure, which in turn causes the air to move from areas of high pressure to low, what we feel as wind.

  6. Tempt shallow minds to look deeper… Einstein realized that the general theory of releativity lead us to all established theories for “hot” fusion and some light and gravitation observed phenomenon… yet was sorely lacking. LENR – SCIENCE, NANOPARTICLE INTERACTIONS or NANO-SCIENCE, QUANTUM PHYSICS, and COSMOLOGY were yet unexplained by the works to date… upon Einstein’s death the grand unified field theory was eluded to only by him… PONDER THIS and help Einstein succeed by taking science beyond presently known theoretical physics, following both imagination and the scientific method… Keep Einstein Dreaming. please please please!

“Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency to the reality you want and you cannot help but get get that reality (everything is energy). It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. (or the philosophy or sociology of science) This is physics.” ——- Albert Einstein——

Words in ( ) are mine. Yet consider this… Albert was clearly a “Quack” when he left school… Was wholy alone and cleary “Fringe” in his theorizations… Always apart from “Mainstream”. Without a doubt his works are the basis for “HOT” fusion science< yet he was troubled and dissatisfied with the incompleteless of his works and also the major utilizations of his insight…. atomic bombs and nuclear power. Branded a traitor. Discredeted like Cold Fusion. We can do better. Ask Einstein.

  8. Hello, Does anyone have Steven Chu’s email. The Secretary of Energy should surely have a full mailbox.

    Best Regards, Paul Maher

    1. Hey Paul, Here’s the DoE contact page: http://www.doe.gov/about-us/contact-us

It may be that contacting members of Congress and the Senate on the Energy Committees who can direct where funding goes would be the best route. We did a huge mailing last fall, and then the committee brought up ARPA-E for a hearing. Now they offer 150 million for “transformational energy”.

      I hope labs apply.

Of course it’s always fun to call the Whitehouse comment line at 1-202-456-1111 and give your 2 cents, though that’s more performance art than actually worthwhile..

  9. It’s caused acbeuse the sun heats the planet differently, and over vast areas. As a place warms up, the air expands, causing a pressure change. Wind is simple high pressure air moving towards a low pressure region to balance things out. The boundaries are not normally so definite that you could notice the effect you described.Simply, it is caused by sun acbeuse if no sun will there Then the no area will become hot, no air will rise, and no one will come to take the rising air’s placeHope it helps!!
