Starting 2012 with Cold Fusion 101

A new short course on cold fusion science and technology sponsored by the Engineering and Computer Science departments at Massachusetts Institute of Technology will be held in January 2012 during institute’s Independent Activities Period.

Designed for MIT students, Cold Fusion 101: Introduction to Excess Power in Fleischmann-Pons Experiments addresses the early history of cold fusion science beginning with the analysis of the original palladium-deuterium type systems that Drs. Fleischmann and Pons used in their research during the late 1980s.

Peter Hagelstein of MIT Electrical Engineering is leading the class with Mitchell Swartz of Jet Energy in a technical overview of theory and experimental electro-chemistry over seven days January 23-27, 30, 31 from 11AM-12:30PM.

Nickel-hydrogen systems will also be addressed with a look at Francesco Piantelli‘s experiments. Professor Piantelli collaborated with Sergio Focardi generating energy by combining hydrogen and the metal nickel in the mid-nineties, research which inspired Andrea A. Rossi‘s E-Cattechnology.

Dr. Hagelstein has been exploring the theoretical aspects of cold fusion looking to find a model of the reaction. He is also involved experimentally through the design of thermal diodes, a technology which promises a more efficient thermoelectric conversion, the process whereby heat energy is converted into usable electricity. He was quoted in this article of 2009 “Turning Heat into Electricity” about this research.

Most recently, Dr. Hagelstein spoke as part of Cold Fusion Energy Inc at the World Green Energy Symposium held in Philadelphia, PA this past October.

Dr. Swartz will discuss experimental results from the Jet Energy lab where he developed the Phusor generator. Preferring the terminology Lattice Assisted Nuclear Reactions LANR to describe his research, he hosts Colloquium on LANR/CFat MIT annually.

You can read the scientific papers of both Dr. Hagelstein and Dr. Swartz on the International Society of Condensed Matter Nuclear Science‘s Library page, and it’s pretty heady stuff.

While the course is designed for the students at MIT, special candidates may be able to attend with prior instructor approval.

      Also, “the pattern of the Rossi debacle”?

      A bigger debacle is that most people have no clue about the possibilities available through LENR science and technology.

  2. Your reporting something that should of happened 23 years ago, when is science going to have an independent judicial inquiry into it’s failures with Cold Fusion and persecution of Pons and Fleischmann.
    Main-line science has lost all respect and credibility until this fiasco is brought clearly into the open, the people responsible named and justice seen to be served.

      The educational system as it exists is obsolete. More learning occurs outside the classroom than inside. The universe is our classroom now. As cold fusion slips into the academic curriculum and moves into our purview, from the ambient ground to a separate figure, we know that it’s here.

      I’ve been a teacher for many years, and know the frustration that many teachers feel at not being able to move with technology and attitudes due to the bureaucracy of academic institutions. There is little freedom for teachers to teach what they believe is relevant. More privately produced seminars, workshops, colloquium will emerge. The wandering philosopher returns.

Yes, the possibilities of CF are indeed awesome — that’s why I have always wanted a successful anomaly to be developed by one group and strongly verified by many independent groups — as an unqualified scientific layman “pragmatic skeptic” since December 1996, I’ve served the process of global collaboration by providing really simple, common sense searches for errors and alternative understandings in the many published reports in mainstream scientific journals, while cautioning that any new physics has to be publicly understood to assess the world hazard of weapons applications, such as fast production of radioactive isotopes for dirty bombs — Rossi does claim gamma radiation emission and element transmutation, as well as over a dozen explosions, no details given at all… Did you look at the details of my Piantelli critique? Critical feedback based on polite reason and public evidence based communications is crucial for human and scientific progress — among the most productive traditions in human evolution.

  4. True there are many, mesurement errors in the tech data, proposesed
    by scientist unfamilar with heat measurment. Piaintelli’s measurement of temperature and not actual heat gain is in error. This is not to say that
    the science is flawed. That the value of excess heat is a question, the fact that there is excess heat is not. If you look at the paper S.Krivit wrote of his interview with Piantelli, in it he describes a runaway, that showed without question large excess heat. There have been many other expariments, that have produced similar results. Given you limited knowllege of heat mesurement,I understand what your concerns are. Heat should be messured in : BTU or Calories or Joules.

      1. KWhr is fine for input energy, whereas the output is expressed as excess heat not an electrical term. Temerature will not give an acurate measure of heat. This is why Rossi is not to be bielived. Rossi knows there is excess heat, but has no idea how to control or measure it. His atempt to market a product with only a partial understanding of the science is a scam. One needs to have control of the reaction, not just clain it’s invention.

  5. Sad that they are just getting around to this 20 years too late.
    MIT is a part of the system, so long as there is a barrel of oil to sell, schools will not teach anything but consumerism. MORE MONEY give me more,and as long as the powers that be are fat and happy, they will continue to teach consumtion.

  6. So why are Fleischmann and Pons still looked upon as science pariahs instead of being awarded the Nobel prize for physics? What is the scientific world waiting for? For these two great man to die? Shame..

    1. I don’t think that is the case today. Their work has been replicated thousands of times. The so called educated scientists have kept their work alive, it’s much like hot fusion, they know it’s not workable,so it is suported knowing it will fail. The same is any work such as Piantelli’s is hidden away because it mite just succeed in helping mankind. If it
      does not make the rich richer it cannot be real science.

      The science is real. The technology is going to take awhile to get to us, but its already started, and there ain’t no stoppin it!

      1. I agree, sadly the people who are in greatest need, will be the last to benifit. Find someone who needs help and see what you can do. Not a handout, but a hand up.

    1. Hey George, thanks for the link, I’ll check it out. I don’t really subscribe to this theory of central planning by global forces. For me, I see the current problem with our educational system as a clash of ideologies and technological landscapes.

      The current ed system is based on industrial era models presupposing a literate, or literate-capable student. In today’s digital world, the literate student is almost extinct. Under a constant stream of digital stiumlation, they do not develop the “reading brains” described by Maryanne Wolf in her Proust and the Squid. Students enter classrooms as though they are visiting Mars.

      The technological landscape for young people today is far ahead of the whiteboards and books classroom curriculum.

F&P are not heralded as inventors as they were suppressed and their technologies stolen by those dirty slimy oil tycoons who could not fathom a world of free energy and enslavement of man to their filth. Goodbye Fission and Combustion, the destruction of G-d’s building blocks and hello the mating of atomic elements to generate love and beautiful unlimited energies as G-d would be proud of this achievement. I like F&P invented cool techs that changed the world, not nearly as important and they put a bomb in my car in Florida to murder my family over a measly few Trillion dollars.
