Dr. Brian Ahern Connects Nanomagnetism & LENR — Interview

Dr. Ahern is a physicist with a PhD from MIT whose academic work focused on exploring BCS-theory and superconductivity. In 2012, he issued an in-depth report on nano-scale cold fusion for the Electric Power Research Institute. Earlier this year the open-source Martin Fleischman Memorial Project added Brian to their global-coalition of researchers and experimentalists who are working to bring an open-source cold fusion solution to the world. He was also a featured lecturer at this year’s 2014 MIT LENR Colloquium – an annual event hosted by Drs. Mitchell Schwarz & Peter Hagelstein. Radioactivity Decreasing Effect of 4-5 nm Silver Particles on K40

The Japan Radioisotope Association （JRIA） held its the 51th workshop of isotope and radiation researh at the University of Tokyo from July 7 to July 9. The program in Japanese is published here.

Dr. Norio Abe and Dr. Shin Iwasaki made presentations about the experiments of radioactivity decreasing effect of 4-5 nm silver particles. The below is quoted from the program and translated to English by me.

I report the most interesting experiment result in the above presentations in this article.
Dr. Abe and Dr. Iwasaki had been announced the experimental results that the radiation of the contaminated soil was reduced when they added nano sliver solutions to the soil. This presentation showed the new experiment that nano silver particles could decrease radiation of radioactive potassium (K40).

I think this result is very important in the following points.

Radioactivity decreasing effect of 4-5 nm silver particles was effective for K40 other than radioactive Cs. I think they expected the effect because they have found radioactivity decreasing effect for both Cs137 and Cs134.
Potassium fertilizer used in the experiment can be purchased by anyone. The key material, 4-5 nm silver particles, is shipped by UFS-REFINE company. Therefore, I expect reproduction of the experiment will become much easier.

My summary of presentation material for the oral presentation by Dr. Iwasaki is shown below.

K40 is radioactive material present in nature, 0.01% abundance ratio, T1/2 = 12 billion years.
Because the sensitivity of spectrometer (Clear Pulse Co., A2702) is low, a large amount of potassium fertilizer is required, then they filled U9 type standard container with Potassium fertilizer (76.7g).
As the first position (“up” position), they put the spectrometer horizontally at the bottom of the lead shielding box and put the U9 container on the spectrometer. As the second position (“down” position), they put the U9 container horizontally at the bottom of the lead shielding box and put the spectrometer on the U9 container. They regarded two measurements, up and down positions (each measurement takes 12 hours), as one unit and calculate the average of result values.
They started Series I experiment from February 12, 2013. After the initial measurement, they opened the container to check the content, and transferred the content to the tray. Then, they added 5 g of Talc powder supporting nano silver particles (300 ppm) to the content and stirred it. And they added 10 cc of collagen solution supporting nano silver particles (160 ppm) to the content and stirred it carefully. After the process, they returned the content in the U9 container and sealed the joint part of the lid by tape. They did 8 units of measurements until August 9. For the measurements, they also measured background radiation many times.
(They watered UFS-CW20F to get suitable density (160 ppm) as collagen solution supporting nano silver particles.)
Because in the 8 units of measurements, they missed the down position measurements in 2 times, they showed the 6 units results. Each figure shows relative ratio to the initial radiation value. Each radiation value is calculated as
[total number of photoelectric peak area of K40] – [background].

As the result, the decreasing ratio is about 20%. The estimated uncertainty of the average value taking into account the “up / down” difference is about 3% to 12% and the statistical uncertainty is under 2.5%.
On September 10, they opened the U9 container to check the content and injected 5cc of collagen solution supporting nano silver particles (20ppm) to the center of the content. From one day later, they started Series II measurements and they are going now. They obtain the similar result in the Series II.
In conclusion, they can set the hypothesis that 4-5 nm silver particles can decrease the radioactivity of K40, too.

I expect that other scientists will reproduce the experiment and find new technology to reduce radioactivity of huge volume of nuclear waste.

Edmund Storms’ “The Explanation of LENR” provides “physical science based model”

A new book by Edmund Storms reviews the top contenders for the scientific prize of the century, the theory of cold fusion, and analyzes the assumptions on which each different model rests with the critical glare of the scientific method.

The Explanation of Low Energy Nuclear Reaction: An Examination of the Relationship between Observation and Explanation published by Infinite Energy Press, juxtaposes today’s theories with the observed laboratory results, and applies the basic laws of physical nature and materials science to the metallic host of the reaction.

Unsatisfied that the current explanations of cold fusion do not address the wide variety of data, and require unsupportable assumptions, Dr. Storms then offers another idea – how to initiate the reaction, essentially describing the nuclear active environment (NAE), the set of necessary and sufficient conditions needed for the reaction to occur.

Where does the reaction occur?

This is a contentious issue, as researchers in the field still do not agree on where the reaction actually occurs. Storms believes it occurs outside the chemical structure of the host metallic lattice in tiny nano-cracks that trap hydrogen nuclei and electrons in an unusual configuration. When the hydroton resonates, a form of fusion occurs whereby the mass is transformed to heat energy in smaller portions, and photons are released along the axis of the column of hydrogen. Make the right-sized space, fill it with hydrogen, apply resonance, and the reaction will happen straightaway.

His recipe was constructed from the grass roots of science – lab measurements collected over twenty-five years by a global community. In those years, Storms has conducted multiple surveys of the field, as both a Los Alamos National Lab nuclear chemist, and an independent researcher, giving him a broad familiarity with the observations.

In the book’s Foreword, Dr. Michael McKubre (SRI) writes: “The opportunity to learn directly from the most knowledgeable person in arguably the most important emerging field, and to share his concise and well considered condensation of a difficult and scattered literature, are not the only or primary reasons to comprehend The Explanation of Low Energy Nuclear Reaction. Laid out clearly and gently in Chapter 5, ‘Description of an Explanation,’ is the first physical science based description of a potential explanation for cold fusion.”

Different model for every lab

While cold fusion has been an experimental fact for two-and-a-half decades, a generally accepted theory has eluded scientists, and it hasn’t helped that the laboratory phenomenon of cold fusion is in complete disagreement with conventional nuclear theory. That, and the ragged history of reproducibility (now ended), has revealed a completely new frontier in condensed matter nuclear science (CMNS): the apparent creation of fusion-sized heat and other transmutation elements in and around metallic solids like palladium and nickel, among other materials.

It means a source of ultra-clean energy, super dense and long-lasting, decentralized and off-grid. With a virtually limitless supply of fuel from hydrogen, it means a second chance for a green technological future for the planet. As all systems re-tool to accommodate the new energy technology, it means a new economy as well. The tiny reactors are now being engineered for consumer devices, yet the pace is slow.

Each lab with a working generator follows a different model of the reaction. JET Energy has the NANOR device, engineered by Dr. Mitchell Swartz in association with theorist Dr. Peter Hagelstein of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Brillouin Hot Tube is based on engineer Robert Godes‘ Quantum Fusion Theorem. Andrea Rossi‘s E-Cat was developed with the thinking that nickel-to-copper transmutations as described by Sergio Focardi provided the powerful thermal output. In Japan, Technova, Inc is associated with theorist Dr. Akito Takahashi of Kobe University, and the list goes on.

All these models have gone through revisions as new ideas arrive. Still, none of the proposed explanations have fostered the winning coup of both control of the generator and a commercially-viable energy output. Only a complete theory will describe how to maximize the potential of this reaction and point to an optimally engineered technology.

Soliciting wider participation to find a solution
